The importance of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) has drawn our attention for their potential therapy of disease in the future. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are pluripotent cells which are able to differentiate into all three primary germ layers: the ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. However, ESCs become heterogeneous after consecutively passage in vitro as evidenced by morphological changes, low self-renewal and spontaneous differentiation rates. Therefore, it is critical to develop favorable culture conditions. A growing body of evidence shows that small molecular compounds can play an important role in the regulation of pluripotency and self-renewal of ESCs. As a natural compound, resveratrol gains a great interest for its wide range of biological properties, while the effect of this compound on mESCs pluripotency and self-renewal remained to be elucidated.
