Magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) comprise a new generation of magnetic polymer materials based on soft polymer matrices filled with magnetic nano- or microparticles. In a magnetic field the filler particles are magnetized, start to interact and to form mesoscopic structures dependent on magnetic field. Due to polymer softness there exists a coupling between elastic forces and magnetic forces acting between magnetic particles in a magnetic field, and the balance between these two types of interactions defines magnetic filler microstructures. Many physical properties of a composite material depend on its microstructure and thus could be controlled by magnetic fields. In particular, it has been shown that MAEs demonstrate magnetorheological effect, magnetodielectric effect, magnetoresistivity etc. Highly responsive MAEs have a great potential for various practical applications and we are currently experiencing a boom in their development. In this presentation new properties of MAEs will be reviewed. Furthermore, we will demonstrate new ways of MAE applications. In particular, we report on our recent results of theoretical and experimental study of magnetic forces acting between MAE samples and permanent magnets in various configurations which have shown high prospects of using MAE as an element of magnetic retina fixator for treatment of complicated retinal detachments.
