This thesis has studied comprehensively the reasons, scale, nature and consequences of the destruction of Byzantine Kherson in the Second half of the 10th century – the first half of the 11th century. For this purpose different sources have been studied in detail and compared: archaeological, epigraphy and sphragistics data, as well as written sources of war and political events in the epoch studied in Black Sea Region which could cause destructions in Kherson. The historiographic tradition formed was considered, and the extent of reasoning by different researchers of the time and causes of Kherson destruction the second half of the 10th century – the first half of the 11th century was evaluated. It was established that fixing the date of the catastrophe befell the city by using archaeological data is only possible by monetary and ceramic materials from the closed complexes connected with the damage stratum of the epoch studied. Arguments in favour of damage dating by the first decade of the 11th century are presented. Studying of the Kherson planigraphy of the 10th-11th centuries boundary showed that the catastrophe damaged parts of the defensive walls and Christian temples which were built on the mellow (sand or piled up) soil; but those rested on the rocky base escaped destruction, in general. All early-medieval habitable country estates discovered to the present day were damaged. These facts are the argument in favour of seismic causes of the catastrophe befell the city. The hypothesis that Kherson was destructed by the Black Sea earthquake with the epicentre located to the south from the today’s Yalta has been grounded, its possible parameters being given. Comparison of the data from Byzantine, Ancient Russian, Arabic, Armenian, and Khazar (Judaic) written sources made it possible to exclude war and political events from the probable causes of the city destruction. It was shown that Kherson could not be damaged either by the troops of Khazar commander Pesakh in the first half of the 10th century, or by armed force of Kiev prince Vladimir in 988-989, or by the expedition of Byzantine commanders Mong and Spheng in 1016. Reconstruction of the historical events, which is different from the existing ones, has been suggested; in the epicentre of these events was Byzantine Kherson at the end of the 10th century – the first half of the 11th century. The siege of the city by Prince Vladimir took place in the autumn of 987 – spring of 988. Vladimir began to carry on talks about his marriage to Princess Anna for the first time from Kherson captured by him. During the siege and capture of the city, as well as while his talks with emperor Basil II, the Kiev prince took actions with the regard for the internal and international situation of Byzantium invasion of Bulgarians that threatened an overthrow of the Macedonian dynasty. “The Korsun campaign” concurred in time with the initial (the most dangerous for the legal power) period of the revolt raised by Varda Phoka. Kherson remained loyal to the ruling Byzantine dynasty during the disturbance, including the time its being in siege. The revolt raised by George Tsula, the former Kherson governor (stratig), in 1016 after the city destruction by earthquake bears no direct relation to Kherson. It took about half a century to rebuild the city destructed by the earthquake. The restoration was made quite regularly. At first the defensive walls were restored, then habitable country estates were rebuilt according to the antiseismic technology “Anatolian style” which was new to the city; after that the citizens erected several temples. At the concluding stage of Kherson restoration the parts of the defensive walls, which were hastily erected after the earthquake, underwent major reconstruction. Just this event is conveyed by the latest epigraphic memorial of Byzantine Kherson that was found – inscription by Leon Aliat dated by 1059. Key words: Byzantium, Kherson, Russia, destruction, earthquake, siege.
