Abstract: NOVELTY - Preventing neutrophil activation, comprises contacting a sample containing neutrophils with a mitochondrially targeted antioxidant (I). USE - The method is useful for: preventing neutrophil activation, preventing matrix metallopeptidase-9 release from activated neutrophils, treating a patient suffering from an inflammatory disorder, where the inflammatory disorder is caused by pyelonephritis, pancreatitis, diabetes, trauma, sepsis, infection (bacterial infection), hepatitis, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ischemia, acute aortic dissection, kidney disease, or hyperglycemia, and the inflammatory disorder is a chronic or acute inflammatory disorder, or an autoimmune disease, and lowering blood vessel permeability in a mammal suffering from a glucose metabolism disorder (claimed); and preventing and treating pyelonephritis, pancreatitis, diabetes and glucose metabolism disorders, hepatitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ischemia, acute aortic dissection, kidney disease, trauma, bacterial infections, acute inflammatory disorders, sepsis, and autoimmune disorders including bronchial asthma. Test details are described but no results given. ADVANTAGE - The method prevents disassembly of cell-to-cell contacts in an affected tissue caused by the presence of high glucose in the tissue and prevents tissue damage by preventing neutrophils from becoming activated (claimed). DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preventing neutrophil activation, comprises contacting a sample containing neutrophils with a mitochondrially targeted antioxidant of formula (I) or their solvates, salts, isomers or prodrugs.
