The boundaries of bioclimatic zones were determined on the plains of Russia: the semi-arid zone corresponds to the value of the isoline 0.35, dry subhumid - 0.50 and subhumid - 0.75. They correspond to values of the aridity index (AI) - the ratio of the average annual precipitation level to the potential evapotranspiration. Potential evapotranspiration was calculated by the Penman method. The dry subhumid zone (dry-steppe landscapes) lies between the isolines 0.35 <AI <0.50, and the subhumidic one between the isolines 050 <AI <0.75, which is predominantly the steppe landscapes in the East European Plain and the forest-steppe on the West Siberian Plain. The sub-humid zone in some areas is characterized by an increased frequency of atmospheric and soil-atmospheric droughts, which can be regarded as episodically arid. The satellite indicator of land degradation (albedo) shows a significant positive trend of degradation in the dry sub-humid and semi-arid zones and positive but unstable in the sub-humid zone.
