Enhalus acoroides (L. fil.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae).
Halophila Thouars is a genus of "sea grass" from the family Hydrocharitaceae s. l. (the order Alismatales), which includes 19 species with a disjunctive areal in the tropical waters of the World Ocean, as well as in the subtropical and temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere.
To reconstruct the processes of settlement of Halophila, we analyzed 5.8S ribosomal RNA and 36 morphological features of 8 species of the genus; As an external group (outgroup), Enhalus acoroides (L. fil.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) was used.
The basal species obtained by the consensus cladogram is Halophila beccarii, which is widespread in the southwest of the Pacific and in the Indian Ocean. Next are the sister species H. engelmannii (tropical Atlantic littoral) and H. tricostata (south-west Pacific and Indian oceans). Halophila decipiens, distributed in the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Southwestern Pacific Oceans, is sister to all other species of the genus that have been studied, which form two sister pairs: H. australis (the southern coast of Australia) + H. major (northwest Pacific) and H. hawaiiana (Hawaii area) + H. ovalis (south-west Pacific, Indian Ocean). All knots of the cladogram (excluding the dinotomy of H. engelmannii and H. tricostata) have high support for bootstrap (> 90%). The data obtained by us suggest that the settlement of the genus Halophila originated from the southwest Pacific / Indian Ocean, where most species of the genus still live. Tropical waters of the Atlantic species of the genus were inhabited twice, the other two "tracks" of the settlement of Halophila reached the center / northwest of the Pacific and the temperate waters of Australia.
