Аннотация:The article analyses the outlook for frame semantics as an approach to theanalysis of the structure of human sensory experience. The conceptualization of sensoryexperience is one of the extensively discussed problems in modern linguistics, psychology andphilosophy. Sensory experience tends to be experienced directly and its description andgeneralization in the form of concepts are often questioned. The use of the semantic approachallows us to identify significant dimensions in mental notions of sensory qualities. This potentialis illustratedin the analysis of the semantic field Quiet in the Italian language. In this field, 16adjectives were analysed via dictionary definitions, frequency in the corpora of the Italianlanguage and native speakers’ usage. The latter was surveyed with the use of questionnaires. As aresult, a frame structure was constructed, which demonstrated that there are differences in the useof the adjectives depending on whether they mean sounds or objects that emit sounds. Forsounds, such parameters as “voice/non-voice”, “intentional/spontaneous”, “explosive/nonexplosive”, “one source/several sources” and also “weight-dependent/not weight-dependent” areimportant. For the characteristics of objects that emit sounds, the discriminationbetweenlocations, people and sound/non-sound devices gains importance.
