Аннотация:
Dependencies of the Young’s modulus E and internal friction coefficient Q-1 on temperature and magnetic field were measured along the crystallographic direction b in the basal plane of holmium single crystal. The measurements were performed by the method of thin rod flexural vibration at a frequency ∼3 kHz in a temperature range 80-430 K in magnetic fields up to 2.5 kOe. It is found that the magnetic phase transition paramagnetism-helicoidal antiferromagnetism at the Néel temperature TN = 123.5 K is accompanied by a sharp minimum in the E(T) temperature dependence and an anomalous abrupt increase of the internal friction. The magnetic part of the Young’s modulus was found in a temperature range 80-150 K. The E(T) dependence is described well in the paramagnetic region up to room temperature by the Debye model with characteristic temperature ΘD = 254 K. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
