Аннотация:A methodological approach to creating unified soil databases is discussed by the example of the BOREAL database compiled by the authors on the basis of published materials on the soils in the boreal belt of Russia. It includes data on 11 chemical and physicochemical soil properties for 555 soil profiles (nearly 4000 soil horizons). Database compilation consists of four principal stages: (1) the conceptual stage (determination and choice of the goals and particular aims of the work, data sources, and the criteria for data selection), (2) the stage of data sampling and coding of information (the practical issues are considered), (3) the stage of verification (detection of errors and methods to eliminate them), and (4) the stage of attestation of the information capacity of a database. The BOREAL database is assessed from the geographic, classification, and analytical viewpoints. The statistical consequences of these assessments are discussed.
