Electrochemical reduction of the [MnW6O24]8- heteropoly anion salts is studied for the first time. Special attention is given to the possibility of an experimental investigation of the central ion reduction in connection with the problem of finding new redox systems with a long-range electron transfer. The effective hydrodynamic radius, the equilibrium potential of the Mn(2+/4+) system in the system under study, and the rate constant of the electron transfer are estimated by the polarography (mercury dropping electrode), cyclic voltammetry (carbosital electrode), potentiometric titration, and spectrophotometric analysis of the products of the preparative-scale electrolysis. It is found that the central ion reduction leads to the complex destruction. © 1998 MAHK Hayka/Interperiodica Publishing.
