The formation of polyelectrolyte complexes of polymethacrylic (PMAA) and polyacrylic (PAA) acids with the polymeric base poly-N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide (PVC-C 2H 5Br) has been investigated, using the methods of potentiometric titration and rapid sedimentation to analyze the reactions involved. It was found tha t the compact conformation characteristics of PMAA in aqueous solutions has a marked effect on reactions between polyelectrolytes. Moreover the composition of the polycomplex PMAA-PVP-C 2H 5Br is constant in acid media given a fivefold excess of PMAA, and in aqueous solutions of equimolar mixtures of the polymeric components there are both free PVP-C 2H 5Br macromolecules and macromolecules entirely occupied by "packed" PMAA molecules. The conformational transition of PMAA in the polycomplex is displaced to a considerable extent into the acid pH region. A model of the polyelectrolyte complex PMAA-PVP-C 2H 5Br is proposed and discussed. © 1977.
