Аннотация:Electron transfer from NADH to ferricyanide and from succinate to O2 and also ATP synthesis in mitochondria were investigated under different conditions. It was established that ferricyanide, by replacing O2 as terminal acceptor, causes the generation of DELTAmu(H+) across the membrane but fails to initiate the operation of the proton cycle. The data obtained indicate that mitochondria can use the DELTAmu(H+) generated by the redox chain only under aerobic conditions. Normally, oxygen apparently performs two functions (not just one function). The second function possibly consists in generating a superoxide radical anion. It was shown that, in the decoupled state (in the presence of the antioxidant propyl gallate), the ATP synthesis by mitochondria can be stimulated by superoxide anion generation. This effect can be removed by superoxide dismutase.
