Аннотация:Simulation of extreme surges in the Taganrog Gulf on March 24, 2013 and September 24, 2014 was made to study the formation features and to find out requirements for the precision of simulating atmospheric and marine circulation in the Sea of Azov. For this purpose, 2 versions of the INMOM model (Institute of Numerical Mathematics Ocean Model) were used/ Their spatial resolutions are 4 km and 250 m. For setting atmospheric forcing over the Sea of Azov, two data types were used: ERA-Interim reanalysis and the simulation results of the WRF model (Weather Research Forecast) with spatial resolution of 80 and 10 km respectively. It was shown, that the quality of the simulation of surges in the Sea of Azov depends more on the quality of input atmospheric forcing than on the spatial resolution of the ocean circulation model. The simulation of the atmospheric forcing based on the WRF model with higher spatial resolution makes it possible to reproduce the extreme surges with a higher accuracy than with Era-Interim reanalysis. The simulation of an even higher storm surge on September 24, 2014 showed that there was an excess of the level by almost 50 cm in model results from the observed when in the simulations on March 24, 2013 there was an underestimation of 29 cm. Possibly, this excess of the observed maximum is due to flooding of the coastal zone which was not taken into account in simulations.
