The hydrolysis of anhydrous aluminum chloride vapor during its mixing with water vapor was studied at various molar ratios of the components, various temperatures (within 90-120°C) and durations of residence of solid aerosol particles in the gas flow. Solid thermohydrolysis product particles collected by filtration of the gas phase through a track filter at various distances from the plane of mixing of the reagents were examined using scanning electron microscopy and local electron microdiffraction analyses. Based on an analysis of the obtained particle size distributions, a mechanism of the nucleation and growth of such particles was proposed and the main parameters of the growth model were determined. The thermohydrolysis of aluminum chloride vapor was found to occur through a heterophase route. Copyright © 2005 by Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
