The behavior of some porphyrin ligands (pheophytins a and b, protoporphyrin IX, protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, 1,4,5,8-tetramethylporphyrin, and tetraphenylporphyrin) and their metal (Mg, Zn, Cu, Pd, Pt, and Pb) complexes is studied under the conditions of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Data on the separation of porphyrin ligands and their metal complexes by HPLC are presented, and the mechanisms of the sorbate-sorbent-eluant interactions are considered. It is demonstrated that the chromatographic retention parameters of pigments depend on the structural features of the porphyrin moiety. The results can be useful for the development of a unified rational system for seeking efficient eluants for the analysis of porphyrins by HPLC. © 1997 MAEe cyrillic signK Hayκa/Interperiodica Publishing.
