1. The relation between the chemical shifts of the 13C nuclei and the total charges on the carbon atoms was examined for benzene, toluene, phenol, anisole, and their para-protonated forms. 2. The slope of the relation between the chemical shift and the charge is practically the same for the protonated and unprotonated compounds, in which connection for the first the chemical shifts are shifted downfield, which is explained by the smaller shielding from the π-system of the ring due to the smaller average π-electron density. © 1974 Consultants Bureau.
