In this study we are going to observe the phenomenon of code switching from English into French as a tool of
reflecting the exclusiveness of the elitaire Asian societies. Our research is based on the books by K. Kwan, because the majority
of characters represent an intellectual, educated circle and all of them are fluent in French, which is considered the second
most popular language in private schools around the world. Most of the characters turn to French to make a certain impression
on the interlocutor in the book, for example, to talk with a gallery owner from Paris, a designer of very expensive clothes, or an
au pair from France.
The use of this language in the books is due to stylistic and emphatic reasons, as it is usually used by the bilinguals for expressing
their intentions or for a topic change. It is thought that bilinguals know two language systems and activate them simultaneously,
when they need to express their communicative intentions more clearly. Based on the examples from the book, we
will try to connect the theoretical context of psycholinguistic theory with its actual literary use and explore the ways that linguists
apply to give an exact definition for each phenomenon.
