flavus, A. aureus, A. gangeticus, A. floridanus, A. hypochondriacus A. giganteus, A. mantegazzianus,
A. bouchonii, A. mangostanus, A. oleraceus, A. tricolor, A. cruentus, A. hybridus, A. caudatus)

Abstract
In this study we analyzed the plastid region psbA-trnH of 16 Amaranthus (A. flavus, A.
aureus, A. gangeticus, A. floridanus, A. hypochondriacus A. giganteus, A. mantegazzianus, A.
bouchonii, A. mangostanus, A. oleraceus, A. tricolor, A. cruentus, A. hybridus, A. caudatus) in
order to determinate genetic variability. The region studied resulted in a low polymorphism
level (2,36% of the nucleotide bases). Simple Nucleoite Polymorphism (hence forth SNPs)
and indels were detected. The wild species A. gangeticus showed the highest genetic variability
(2 haplotypes). 11 haplotypes were described for the first time for both cultivated and wild
species of Amaranthus. Other molecular markers such as AFLP, SSR, RAPD must be explored
to resolve the taxonomic and phylogenetic problems within the genus.
