Аннотация:The understanding of the relations between executive functions (specificallycognitive flexibility) and language development (narrative production) in5–6 years old children remains limited and contradictory. In this study we asked269 monolingual children who were developing typically to perform DimensionalChange Card Sort (DCCS)method, Raven’s Colored Progressive matrices test andto create four narratives (retelling, creating a story based on one picture and on aseries of pictures). The aim of the study was to examine significant predictors ofthe language development level in preschoolers. In children’s narratives one candistinguish macrostructure and microstructure. The macrostructure comprises thelength of a story, its completeness, adequacy, narrative structure and narrative type,i.e. structure parameters form a narrative as a cohesive and coherent utterance.Phonetics, vocabulary, morphology, syntax compose narrative’s microstructure. The results show that there is a strong correlation between cognitive flexibilityand macrostructure indicators of narrative production whereas there are muchfewer microstructure indicators that have correlations with cognitive flexibility. The children who were able to perform the most difficult task of DCCS method(with borders), were much better in narrative production. Raven’s results showedthat both indicators (non-verbal intelligence and cognitive flexibility) were predictorsof the narrative structure. The results obtained in this study can contributeto better cognitive development of children and their readiness for school.
