Аннотация:The paper reassesses the evidence for active transitive participles in Hittite and suggests that they are in reality formed from the unergative class of intransitive verbs. In the paper we have offered a solution to the problem of active participles from transitive verbs: transitive verbs only form active participles when they are actually used without direct object, i.e. are intransitive (of the unergative subtype). This provides a very simple and elegant rule concerning the use of active participles. They are always formed from intransitive verbs – both unaccusatives and unergatives. Transitive verbs can form only passive participles.
