Аннотация:Rapidly accumulating knowledge about the structure and functional organization of race-specific genes for late blight resistance (R genes) in Solanum plants and on the Phytophthora infestans effectors shape the current understanding of the mechanisms of interaction of P. infestans with potato and its wild relatives and the prospects for breeding new potato cultivars manifesting durable late blight resistance. In the framework of ISTC Project 3714p, DNA markers were developed for R genes and those Solanum genomes which are prospective sources of genes/traits of resistance. These markers were verified using genetic collections of tuber-bearing Solanum species, and retention of these markers through a series of meiotic generations was assessed using registered potato cultivars with firmly established pedigrees and complex hybrids reportedly comprising genetic material of several wild Solanum species. The presence of R genes recognized by DNA markers and simple races of P. infestans was in good agreement and correlated with higher late blight resistance of potato and its wild relatives assessed in the field and laboratory trials. Establishment of clonal collections of these plants opens an exceptional opportunity to compare the evidence obtained with independent methodologies in the genetically identical material. Our results would help enrich the conventional potato breeding with DNA markers as predictors of the R genes and potato resistance to late blight and implement these markers as a tool for mining the genetic collections for new R genes.
