Аннотация:As a universal facial expression, the smile plays an important role in human interactions and social behavior. The problem arises in the field of intercultural communication, when smiles are used and interpreted according to national culturally specific system of nonverbal communication. In this work, I analyze the use of a smile as a nonverbal sign in a few chosen communicative contexts across Russian, European and American cultures. The results suggest that the smile is a culturally embedded nonverbal sign and has different distribution and meanings in the compared cultures. I discuss the results in the historical perspective and try to reveal the current trend of the ongoing changes.
