Dissolved organic matter (DOM) exists in all types of natural water. Its typical water concentrations are small (about 20-50 ppm), nevertheless DOM composes a considerable storage of organic carbon on the Earth, which overtops organic compound reserves of all life forms. As far as DOM has natural origin because of humic substances, it absorbs UV light perfectly and luminescences. Its spectra are used widely, in the process of solving such essential problems, as natural water ecosystem and technological water environment control. Typical fluorescence spectrum of DOM under UV excitation consists of two broad overlapping bands: UV band with maximum in the range of 300-350 nm (fluorescence of protein and phenolic substances) and radioluminescence in visible range with maximum 400-450 nm (humic substances fluorescence). Maximum of humic substance luminescence depends on the excitation wave length. While changing length of excitation from 270 up to 310 nm emission band maximum shifts to short waves (so called «blue shift»). Typical fluorescence spectra of DOM in natural water of different origin are represented in the paper. Quantum efficiency of fluorescence was calculated using absorb spectra. On the basis of comparative analysis of the «blue-shift» value, which was measured for different samples, and dependence between fluorescence quantum efficiency and excitation wave length, there was made a conclusion, that natural humic substances have a larger fluorophore heterogeneity index than commercial humic acid.
