The editors of this two-volume special issues on the contemporary Udmurt asserthow important it is to them that the authors write from a clear personal position, contributing to a thematic overview of today’s Udmurt culture. The written wordis first, concentrating on the most popular forms of today’s literature: the bestknown Udmurt poetesses are discussed in the first article, poetesses who are recognisedas part of Udmurt literature; and for the first time, we draw attention tothe phenomenon of spontaneous writing and publishing outside the frameworkof official, so-called ‘professional’ literature. This theme is developed in an articleespecially dedicated to Internet literature. We do not develop here the languagesection as much as we should have, but linguistics is also represented with anarticle about purism in language use. The second theme, alongside language, ismusic. Two articles develop two important aspects of the role of music in today’sUdmurt culture: the repertoires of villagers, depending on their generation, andmodern youth stage singing culture with its multiple orientations. The thirdtheme is religion. It is both an important and a complicated topic. Among thethree articles composing this section, two are dedicated to the traditional Udmurtreligion, which is alive in peripheral regions. The majority of Udmurt todayare Orthodox, and one article is dedicated to Christian dimensions of contemporaryculture, not entirely forgetting the recent presence of Protestants. Religionis followed by unavoidable reflexions on identity issues. One article reflects onthe national movement in the political arena, while another focuses on the possiblerole of social media in emphasising an initiative by the Udmurt Instagram. Finally, in an attempt not to leave huge gaps in our thematic approach, we presentUdmurt art, Udmurt countryside architecture and contemporary Udmurtnational costume in separate articles.
