Relationship between the characteristics of geomagnetic storms and the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic fieldтезисы доклада

- Аннотация: The relationship between the dynamics and statistical parameters of the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the beta parameter of the solar wind (the beta parameter is equal to the ratio of the thermal pressure of the plasma to the magnetic one), and geomagnetic storms from 1960 to 2015 were studied in this work.The catalog of the IMF sector structure (IZMIRAN, http://www.izmiran.ru/stp/polar/SSIMF/?ASCII), the catalog of daily average values of the beta parameter and average daily values of the Dst index from the OMNI database [https:// spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/data/omni/low_res_omni], a catalog of geomagnetic storms presented on the website of the World Data Center for Solar-Terrestrial Physics [Moscow, http://www.wdcb.ru/stp/geomag/ geomagnetic_storms.ru.html] were used for analysis. The main methodological approach consisted in a comparative analysis of the parameters of the solar wind and geomagnetic storms on the days when the Earth crosses the boundary between the IMF sectors with the days when the Earth is inside the sector. Separately, magnetic storms with a sudden commencement and with a gradual commencement were considered.The paper shows that the average daily values of the beta parameter inside the sector are 10% less than at the border of the sectors.The average strength of storms with sudden commencement and with a gradual commencement does not depend on whether the Earth is inside the sector or crosses the boundaryThe average duration of storms with sudden commencement that are generated when the Earth is inside the sector is 14% shorter than the average duration of storms with sudden commencement that are generated when the Earth crosses the sector boundaryThe average duration of storms with gradual commencement, which are generated when the Earth is inside the sector, is 9% longer than the average duration of storms with gradual commencement, which are generated when the Earth crosses the sector boundary.Thus, more geoeffective (in terms of energy transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere) are storms with a sudden commencement, which are generated when the Earth crosses the sector boundary, and storms with a gradual commencement, which are generated when the Earth is inside the IMF sector.The work was carried out according to the theme "Investigation of wave fields associated with catastrophic processes in various geophysical environments", State Task FMWU-2022-0027.
