Аннотация:The article discusses five cases of using the term ἠϊών (“sea, low, often sandy coast”), which is quite rare for describing the Northern Black Sea region. Three of them describe Achilles’ Dromos (Dionysius of Olbia, Arrian and Pseudo-Arrian), the fourth – Taman Peninsula at the eastern coast of the Cimmerian Bosporus (Aristotle, Strabo and Pliny) and the fifth – the Southern Bug-Dnieper estuary (Dion Chrysostom). Many nuances in the meaning of the word ᾐών were reflected in the North Black Sea Eiones: it can mean simply a seashore, and a shallow, and a low sandy shore (as on Achilles’ Dromos), and the shore of the strait with sandbanks (as on the Taman Peninsula), and the shore of the lake-estuary (as in the Southern Bug-Dnieper estuary), and even, perhaps, toponyms (as on Achilles’ Dromos and Taman).
