This article analyses the international aspects of the conflict in the Horn of Africa, the motives and objectives that prompted the Cuban authorities to take part in these events. The paper discusses the position, intentions, the potential of the key participants in the conflict, shows the background and the main milestones of events of 1977–1978 in connection with involvement in the confrontation
the United States and its allies, on the one hand, as well as Cuba and the Soviet Union on the other. The author has shown that the reasons for the intervention of the superpowers fit into the logic of the development of bipolar confrontation and generally dictated by it given the principles of “realpolitik”. At the same time the Cuban leadership, being on the same side of the “fence” with
the Soviet Union was based on his own ideas of solidarity with developing countries, chosen the path of revolutionary transformations and became a victim of aggression. At the same time the involvement of Cuba in the confrontation between the superpowers was used by Washington as an additional reason for the gradual reversal of the “discharge” for a new round of “cold war”.
