Аннотация:Our current understanding of Pleistocene climatic change effects on the biodiversity of European mammals is largely based on the study of non-subterranean species. To date the consequences of past glaciation cycles on species highly adapted to underground life is poorly investigated. The lack of these data arises the question whether the current amount and distribution of genetic variation in the subterranean mammals is the result of Pleistocene range contractions/expansions. To answer this question the common mole (T. europaea) is one of the best candidates because it is a strict subterranean mammal widespread across Europe. In this research, we first reconstructed the phylogeographic structure and historical demography of the common mole and subsequently compared the genetic results with ecological niche modelling.
