The paper presents a historical account dealing with the key experiments underlying the basic conceptions on the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis since the discovery of photosynthesis and oxygen and isolation of green pigment from leaves by Pelletier and Caventou. Dramatic history of separation of the individual components from this green pigment and the discovery of the red band in the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll and in the action spectrum of photosynthesis is discussed. Experiments of Timiriazeff and Engelmann devoted to the photosynthesis action spectra are compared. Further, photophysics of chlorophyll molecules, their abilities to populate the trip-let state, generate singlet oxygen and photosensitize electron transfer reactions are analyzed. The review concludes with a justification of the concept of pigment-pigment interaction as the major factor determining the spectral properties of chlorophyll in the photosynthetic apparatus.
