Alignment after 2p ionization of Na atoms by electron impact: the 2p(5)3s 1P1 and 3P1 statesстатья

Аннотация:We have measured the alignment A(20) of the Na+ 2p(5) 3s P-1(1) and P-3(1) states after 2p ionization by electron impact via the anisotropic intensity distribution of the fluorescence radiation at impact energies in the range from 38.7 to 400 eV. Cascading transitions, autoionizing as well as radiative transitions, populate indirectly the ionic states 2p(5)3s P-1(1) and P-3(1) and thereby perturb the alignment produced by the direct ionization process at all impact energies. Therefore, no quantitative conclusion about the contribution of partial waves L in the ionization process can be drawn. Nevertheless, at the lowest impact energy of 38.7 eV, the experimental alignment values of the P-1(1) and P-3(1) states with -0.28(4) and +0.11(6) still reflect the very different theoretical threshold values of -0.41 and +0.15 if only the L = 0 partial wave contributes in the ionization process.
