In this session, we will discuss future memory technologies and their application for HPC. Participants will become familiar with hybrid memory approach using DRAM and 3D XPoint media based Optane SSDs. With a combination of those and Intel Memory Drive technology which virtualizes available tiers into a hybrid memory pool, it’s possible to run original Operating System and applications with little performance degradation across aggregated capacity for applications with sensible temporal or spatial data locality. The session focuses on the best practices for using Intel Memory Drive technology in a diverse set of HPC codes, demonstrating strong and weak points of hybrid memory approach. This study covers three types of HPC applications: synthetic benchmarks, popular scientific libraries and scientific applications. We will demonstrate how to analyze and predict the performance of applications with Intel Memory Drive technology using Intel Development Tools.
