The world is undergoing fundamental transformations that are external to translation; at the same time, there is a serious internal crisis within the profession brought about by “natural ageing” of professional translators and interpreters who have been employed by linguistic services of international organizations and national institutions. The public is again interested in the profession of translator, in translation training as well as in competences necessary for aspiring professionals. Next generation translators grow up, study and make progress under different circumstances, which presents new challenges for translation didactics. Facing the global educational framework, schools of translation and interpretation more often than ever before have to refer to their counterparts’ experience, take into account their colleagues’ opinions, streamline their programmes and curricula and introduce changes, sometimes significant, into the teaching process. At present, an innovative approach towards translator training consists in finding common ground between national educational traditions and attempting to build up an efficient teaching model that would be able to maintain and even to prop up the competitiveness of translation schools’ graduates on the market and provide the public with quality translations in various spheres. Developing and implementing such a model based on research and analysis is an objective of the “Translator Training” CIUTI working group set up in 2011 on the initiative of the Strategy Group.
